NeuRizer urea project engages sulphur-removal firm
US COMPANY Merichem last week announced it has been engaged to provide its sulphur-removal technology for NeuRizer’s fertiliser plant being built in north-east South Australia.
Formerly Leigh Creek Energy Ltd, the ASX-listed NeuRizer promotes its NeuRizer Urea Project (NRUP) as being Australia’s first carbon-neutral producer of urea fertiliser.
Under the contract, Merichem will provide engineering for its technology to remove approximately 14 tonnes per day of elemental sulphur from amine acid gas using its LO-CAT H2S removal process.
“We are enthusiastic about supporting NeuRizer’s project for local and export agriculture markets,” Merichem’s senior vice president and general manager of process technologies Cyndie Fredrick said.
“This project demonstrates Merichem’s commitment to help our clients meet their business, environmental emissions and sustainability targets by removing sulphur contaminants from various process streams.”
NRUP is located 550 kilometres north of Adelaide, and aims to produce 1 million tonnes (Mt) per annum in 2025, with around half to be exported under an offtake agreement with South Korea’s Daelim, ahead of doubling production over subsequent years.
Australia currently uses around 2Mt of urea, nearly all of which is imported.
Merichem is based in Houston, Texas, and operates globally in full-service sulphur removal, caustic treating and spent caustic treatment technologies.
Merichem’s contract is with KBR, also based in Houston, which has in turn been engaged by Daelim Engineering & Construction, a stakeholder in NeuRizer.
